Riverside Energy Group leads Michigan’s transition to cleaner natural gas through innovative carbon capture

Riverside Energy Group has entered a new phase of its evolution, pairing large-scale natural gas production with investments in carbon reduction technologies and renewable energy. As Michigan’s largest natural gas producer, the company operates thousands of wells and supplies a significant share of the state's locally produced gas while exploring ways to reduce the environmental impact of traditional energy production.

A major milestone came in 2025 with the launch of carbon capture and storage facilities that now prevent hundreds of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year. By capturing CO₂ that was previously released during natural gas processing and permanently storing much of it underground, Riverside has substantially lowered the carbon intensity of its natural gas products.

The company has also expanded into renewable natural gas through a landfill gas project developed with industry partners. Unlike many similar projects, Riverside’s approach captures and stores the separated carbon dioxide rather than venting it, creating a more comprehensive emissions-reduction strategy.

Alongside these environmental initiatives, Riverside has continued strengthening its operations through a focus on safety, workforce development, and responsible land management. Over the past several years, the company has significantly improved workplace safety performance while maintaining its commitment to employees, landowners, and the communities where it operates.

Riverside views its extensive pipeline network, natural gas resources, and carbon storage capabilities as tools for attracting new industry and supporting economic growth across Northern Michigan. Looking ahead, the company plans to expand both its carbon capture infrastructure and renewable natural gas portfolio while partnering with businesses seeking solutions to reduce industrial emissions.
