Riverside Energy Launches Renewable Natural Gas Facility in Northern Michigan

Traverse City, Michigan — Riverside Energy has launched its Waters Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Facility, a project designed to strengthen Michigan’s in-state energy supply while advancing practical carbon management solutions.

Located in Fredric, Michigan, the facility captures gas from the Waters Landfill and converts it into pipeline-quality natural gas for delivery through Riverside’s existing infrastructure. The project is a joint venture between Riverside Carbon Solutions and North American Power Systems, in partnership with Waste Management.

Riverside is a major contributor to Michigan’s in-state natural gas supply, producing more than half of the gas generated within the state. As Michigan continues to rely heavily on imported energy, projects like Waters help reinforce local supply, support reliability, and contribute to continued energy production in Northern Michigan.

“This project reflects a practical approach to energy innovation,” said Chief Operating Officer, Jim Schramski. “We are making better use of an existing resource, strengthening supply here in Michigan, and integrating it into a system that already serves homes, businesses, and communities across the state.”

The RNG produced at the facility is combined with Riverside’s existing natural gas production and transported through regional pipelines into Michigan’s energy network, where it can support heating, power generation, and transportation fuel needs.

Beyond its energy benefits, the project supports Northern Michigan’s economy. Riverside operates thousands of wells across the region, supports hundreds of jobs, and generates royalty and tax revenue for landowners and local communities.

The Waters RNG Facility positions Northern Michigan as a leader in practical, scalable energy solutions that reduce waste, strengthen dependable domestic production, and advance forward-looking carbon management technologies.
